Our story

A practice shaped by purpose

Obsidian Gate was established in Kuala Lumpur by a small group of legal practitioners who shared a particular frustration: too many people in Malaysia felt shut out of the legal system, not because of cost alone, but because of how the process made them feel. The formality, the jargon, the long silences between updates — it all added up to an experience that left clients feeling more anxious, not less.

We set out to do things differently. Our name reflects our approach: obsidian is formed under pressure, yet its surface is smooth and clear. We believe that even in the most difficult legal situations, there is room for calm, transparency, and genuine respect for the person sitting across the table.

From our office at Menara IGB on Jalan Sultan Ismail, we work with individuals navigating criminal allegations, business owners entangled in shareholder disagreements, and everyday Malaysians who have been treated unfairly as consumers. Each matter is different, but our approach stays the same — listen first, explain clearly, and act with purpose.

Over the years, our practice has grown through word-of-mouth and the trust of the communities we serve. We remain intentionally small so that every client receives direct attention from senior members of our team, rather than being passed along to junior staff or left waiting for callbacks. This is not a volume-driven practice. It is a relationship-driven one.

How We Hold Ourselves Accountable

Bar Council Compliance

All our practitioners are admitted to the Malaysian Bar and comply with the Legal Profession Act 1976 and the Bar Council's Rules of Professional Conduct.

Data Protection

We adhere strictly to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) in how we collect, store, and handle client information.

Conflict of Interest Screening

Every new engagement undergoes a thorough conflict check. If a conflict arises, we disclose it promptly and decline the engagement.

Client Communication Charter

We commit to responding to all client enquiries within one business day. You should never feel left in the dark about the progress of your matter.

Continuing Legal Education

Our team regularly attends seminars and workshops to stay current with changes in Malaysian statute and case law that affect our areas of practice.

Transparent Fee Structure

We believe in upfront and honest billing. All fees are discussed before any work begins, and we provide clear written estimates so there are no surprises.

What we stand for

Our Values in Practice

At Obsidian Gate, we believe that trust is not demanded — it is earned through consistency. Every client engagement, from the first phone call to the final resolution, follows the same principle: treat people the way you would want to be treated during a difficult time. This means speaking plainly, setting realistic expectations, and being present when it matters most.

Legal work in Malaysia spans a broad landscape — criminal proceedings governed by the Criminal Procedure Code, corporate matters under the Companies Act 2016, and consumer claims before the Tribunal for Consumer Claims. Each domain has its own rhythm and requirements. Our team's familiarity with these varied areas allows us to draw connections and apply lessons across different types of legal challenges.

We are also mindful that Kuala Lumpur is a diverse city, home to communities with different languages, cultural expectations, and levels of familiarity with the legal system. We do our best to meet clients where they are — adapting our communication style and ensuring that nothing important gets lost in translation. Our office near the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Bukit Bintang is accessible by public transport, and we accommodate meetings by video call when in-person attendance is not practical.
